What does it mean to maintain the master rights for a sound recording?

The master rightsholder is entitled to claim royalties that have been collected by various organizations following their usage of the owner’s master sound recording. There can be one or several rightsholders of a single master sound recording, often split across several territories. For example, maybe your record label was granted the exclusive right to claim royalties in the USA, while the original record label still owns the master copyright and will collect any royalties generated in the rest of the world.
